Early Life
Robert Bruce Gray was born in 1957 being the youngest of three sons and three daughters to parents Robert and Winifred Gray. His father was a foreman at Evans Deacon shipbuilder who later turned his inventive talents to farming for the benefit of a better family lifestyle. After raising the family of six, Gray’s father returned to the lathes and tool-making trade he was expert at, as head of the Leader Trucks workshop. His mother was Australia’s first Postmaster (distinct in those days from a Postmistress) who became a relieving Postmaster General throughout the South Eastern Queensland region.
Robert Bruce Gray was schooled throughout South East Queensland, Australia often travelling with his mother and sisters during his primary school years and eventually attended Brisbane Boys College and Concordia College to complete his academic curricular schooling; although he attributes much of his talent to his father’s inventive character and his mother’s business acumen.
Even as a young teenager Robert Gray exhibited exceptional talents working on weekends and after school as a carpenter’s assistant to make extra pocket money. He also ran the small factory workshop for Brightways Hardware Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia manufacturing aluminium fly screen windows and doors before gaining an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery with a local builder. At the age of sixteen (16) years his apprenticeship was transferred from Earl Cramp Building Company Toowoomba, who retired, to Clarkways homes, where Gray continued to show his business acumen by working holidays on “bush jobs” and on weekends to eventually run his own building construction company barely by the time he had even technically completed his apprenticeship. Eventually the foremen he had overseeing his apprenticeship became his company foremen where he employed five gangs of builders throughout Queensland building large scale properties.
Career
After completing his apprenticeship in 1977 Gray’s building company continued to grow successfully whereby he started using special imported timbers which lead to the establishment of a timber and building material wholesale company being established to also supply other home builders.
Wanting to secure his own financial future and develop his personal asset base Robert Bruce Gray continued as a registered builder and started land and property developments.
Realising he was gifted with an aptitude for financial negotiations with banks and financial institutions, he was able to secure favourable lending finance for his building company which assisted him to expand into provide a host of other building related services i.e. evaluation, plans and design, marketing, promotions and wholesale sales.
By 1989 Gray had expanded his businesses significantly and had established a timber and building material wholesale business, a land and property development business, and a major building and construction company building spec homes and contract homes. The building company’s book of One Hundred house plans and designs was a big success, especially for those seeking to have large homesteads built.
In 1989 with the sudden decline in building industry because of bad government policy Gray saw an opportunity for a change in career with a new challenge and without any prior experience, became a sales executive for Weststar Motors, an authorised Mercedes Benz dealership. In true Robert Gray form and in a relatively short time thereafter he attained the prestigious honour of membership status to the Star Sales Guild (1990 & 1991) the recognition awarded to those attaining sales status represented to the top five (5) performing sales executives for Mercedes Benz Australia.
Advancing the development of his career in sales and marketing, Gray faced some further challenges in 1992 when he turned to the real estate sector and established himself as a commercial real estate agent. Because of the clientele he developed working with Mercedes Benz, he quickly established himself with a strong “high end” network of liaisons and clients representing Government, Corporate, Banking and Retail sectors.
During 1994 – 1995 Robert Bruce Gray also constructed two (2) shopping centres on two respective parcels of land he acquired in provisional business towns whilst simultaneously establishing a furniture and electrical retail business to operate in those two shopping centres.
In the following two (2) years and in addition to his real estate developments, Gray owned and operated the four (4) retail businesses marketing an array of furniture and electrical goods. He designed a nationwide retail sales ‘loyalty programme’, predominantly to stimulate the growth of his retail businesses, however, many other business types requested to be involved because of the significant growth the ‘loyalty programme’ had promulgated for their business. Additionally, he built a successful finance consultancy brokerage business, borrowing bulk funds for re-lending.
In 1997 Gray diverted some of his energy and interests into the world of International Banking and Finance. He subsequently sold his retail and real estate interests and moved to London where he commenced to establish a valuable banking and finance network in United Kingdom, USA and Europe.
